What kind of tree is it?

I live in Minneapolis MN. There is a tree growning with my lilacs, about 1/3 taller than lilac. Bark is greyish-brown. Trunk is about the size of a baseball bat. There are thorns all along the branches/twigs. I have no idea what this is . . .

What kind of tree is it?
It does sound like a Hawthorne. Be careful, the thorns hide when the tree realy leafs out. If the tree has thorns on the trunk, however, you are probably in the locust family. The Hawthorns will have what looks like small red fruits in the fall that are called haws. They are usually red and quite small. They are not poisonous but have a blah taste.
Reply:neither do i but ive seen them before, ran into a few in the woods, not fun but they get massive and the thorns get huge, id atleast take it out of your garden or it will overwhelm everything in there
Reply:Might be a horse chestnut tree

If you have that then I would advise you to keep it because they are quite rare around these areas.

They originally came from England.
Reply:sounds like a Hawthorn
