About how long will but lilacs last?

I have many lilac bushes in my yard, but have never cut the blooms so I am not sure how long they survive, although I am guessing that they are quite hardy. Any tips for prolonging their life would be greatly appreciated!

Lilacs make gorgeous, fragrant bouquets, but they will last longer if you follow a few easy rules.

1. Carry a bucket of warm water into the garden, and place the lilacs in it as soon as you cut them.

2. Cut lilacs when the flowers are about half open.

3. Cut the stems on a sharp slant with a sharp knife or secateurs.

4. Cut lilacs at the end of the day after they have taken up maximum food and water.

5. Condition lilacs to allow them to take up the most amount of water through the stems. This is done by crushing the lower two inches of the stem with a hammer.

6. Remove most of the foliage from the stem, leaving just a few leaves near the flower. This helps to reduce water loss through transpiration.

7. Place the lilacs in deep warm water for at least four hours and keep in a dark cool room.

Use a hammer to pound the woody ends of your cut lilacs and plunge into warm water, this will help them absorb more water. Change the water every third day is helpful. Keep away from direct sunlight and heater vents to help last longer.

Hope this helps.
