Does it take a few years for lilacs to produce flowers?
Lilacs almost never bloom the year they are planted or transplanted. Blooms only appear on growth that is 3 years old. Once it starts blooming, as long as you don%26#039;t trim the new growth off, it should continue to bloom. You can trim your lilac, just not whack it up!!
Reply:A strong lilac shrub will bloom the year after it%26#039;s planted, but I usually remove those new blooms to give it a year to put roots down. In subsequent years remove the spent blooms once they are finished flowering and cut back 1/3 of the oldest stems right to the ground every year or the bush will become leggy and weak.
Reply:In the south we have 2 kinds of lilac bushes, one is called the %26quot;Old Fashion Lilac%26quot; it takes almost 7 yrs to bloom and if the least bit of frost hits as its getting ready to bloom it won%26#039;t, the other lilac is just one that most nurseries sell but they usually won%26#039;t bloom until the 2nd spring/summer
Reply:my lilac bush has grown to be 8 feet tall in about 5 years. after all the bushes in your area has bloomed and the flowers are all gone, cut back the tallest branches, that way you%26#039;ll get more flowers next year.
