My lilacs are 5 yrs old, mostly healthy with green spotless leaves, but they are curled up. What should I do?

We had this problem last year and some of the plants seem to have stunted growth. We are near Chicago. I have sprayed twice for fungus. This condition seems to also exist on a birch and tulip tree.

Curling leaves without marks is a sign of under watering.

most moisture in a tree is lost through the leaves. In order to conserve water, the first thing a tree will do is curl its leaves, next, if the problem persists it will start to drop leaves.

If the leaves have marks, that is a sign of insect/bugs and the tree should be carefulyl examined to determine what type of insect/bug. Then go to garden center or search online with description of either the insect/bug or the damaged leaves.

My bet is it doesnt have enough water.
Reply:It sounds like you have either a watering issue or an insect problem. I would treat it for possible insects. There are several different types of sprays you could use. Ask you local gardening shop for better details on what you should use.

Reply:Curling of leaves is usually a sign of not enough water or some sort of insect infestation. Your best bet is to take a sample of the leaves to your local garden center. They should be able to tell you what your problem is right away and to give you a solution.
Reply:water it
