Can lilacs be transplanted from the ground to pots temporarily?

I have some of my grandmother%26#039;s lilacs flourishing at my house. I am getting ready to move, but will not be in a permanent location for some time. Can I transplant part of the plant into a pot to plant later at a permanent location?

Can lilacs be transplanted from the ground to pots temporarily?
Yes. If it is winter where you are, it needs to go dormant for a few months. Keep in a cool and dark enviroment, like a basement and transplant when the season is ready for no frost.. Make sure you give it plenty of food and water when you transplant~miracle grow is great.
Reply:Hi,

I would do it.

If you think about it, professional landscapers plant full grown lilacs all the time that are in pots from a nursery vendor.

The nursery vendor grew these lilacs in fields, in rows, by the acres.

Yes the vendors pot-up lilacs at different growth stages, for what-ever the customer ordered.

I for sure would do it, lilacs for the most part are extremely hardy to cold temps, just make sure that the roots are covered with enough soil to prevent exposure from drying winds or sun.

Hope this helps, good luck,

Dave
Reply:depends on how mature they are. if they are older full grown shrubs, then i dont think you have a very good chance of making a successful move. however, if they are the old-fashioned type of lilac that send up suckers from the roots, then you might be able to dig out a few of these suckers and pot them up. you must be sure and get as much root attached as possible. put it some good quality potting soil and make sure it stays consistently moist. Is the ground frozen yet where you live? it will be quite difficult to dig out if its frozen. you will have better luck if theres a way you could return there in the spring and get a sucker then.
