What is wrong with my lilacs?

I have a few lilac bushes that we planted about 2 or 3 years ago. They have never bloomed. The buds come out but never open. This year the bushes are completely covered with buds but they are not blooming, despite the fact that all the neighbors%26#039; lilac bushses have been bloomed for a while.

What am I doing wrong here?

What is wrong with my lilacs?
Lilacs can be temperamental. If they are in a spot where they don%26#039;t get enough light or a crowded by other plants they may not bloom. They are also susceptible to powdery mildew, which shows up as white blotches on the leaves.

The first things to try are fertilizing, pruning back (now), and removing or clipping back other plants that may be crowding them.
Reply:Lilacs are prone to blight which damages the vascular system of the plant. This will prevent the bloom from opening. Do the branches which have buds on them %26quot;droop%26quot; at the ends? ..Do they eventually dry up and then either fall off or stay attached to the plant unless removed? If so, then it is most likely blight. You can spray for this with a fungicide spray such as copper.( that can be found at your local garden center)
Reply:Check your soil - a garden center should be able to tell you what%26#039;s up. I know there are some breeds that do not bloom for the first sveral years - but I didn%26#039;t think they wuld bud during that time either.

My other thought, if it was an older plant - would be to trim down old graowth that could be sapping the nutrients/energy fromthe new growth.

I would just call a garden center %26amp; tell them what type Lilac you planted and what type soil/lighting its planted in.

Good Luck - my favorite flower.
