Growing lilacs?

Can lilacs be grown in Texas? Mostly clay soil, high temperatures

Growing lilacs?
Lilacs need water. For difficult soil/climate conditions, I%26#039;d go with one of the old fashioned varieties instead of the fussier modern hybrids.

Lilacs have to be pruned if they are not to get out of control (they can turn into trees). You cut down all suckers annually, and prune out one-fourth to one-third of the branches once the bush has gotten as large as you can tolerate. Blooms are produced on the previous year%26#039;s growth, so be careful about how you prune. You should take your annual share of blooms for indoor display from the top of the bush, keeping the height under control.
Reply:Sure, lilacs grow anywhere, just give it a boost by adding a bag of black soil and miracle grow.
Reply:Not likely, since they need cold weather (%26lt;32F) to bloom. They also like loamy soil, not clay.
Reply:What I can tell you from personal experience is it sometimes takes them forever to bloom. So, don%26#039;t think it%26#039;s your soil, but, I would add some really good shrub mixture. Topsoil with vermiculite to maintain moisture. Also build up the dirt around it then when you water it will go straight to the roots. Add peat around the top, or any type of plant material to hold the moisture in-we use pine needles that have fallen off.
Reply:I live in northeast Texas, zone 8, lots of clay soil. My sister-in-law gave me a lilac about 1%26#039; tall 4 years ago. Today it%26#039;s apx 4%26#039;. It only started blooming last year. Be patient, keep it fed (I just use a general all purpose fertilizer) and watered and you should gets some blooms. Good luck.
Reply:not likely. i think they need to freeze. my parents in law treid in N. Florida, no luck.

maybe a hybrid might, there are a lot of really nice lilac look a likes out there! but you%26#039;re looking for scent, i%26#039;m not so sure!

good luck!
Reply:yes, I live in georgia and have the same type conditions including soil.....mine grow fine. However, if there is a drought then be sure to keep it watered or the heat will burn it up.
Reply:lilacs grow best in zones 3-7. they like well drained soil and plenty us sun.

miracle-gro has a great encyclopedia of plant care that is my bible for gardening.
