I received a couple of lilac plants that I planted in my yard. They are about 3 feet tall and each has only one stalk but the only greenery is only on the top, kinda like a ficus tree. How does it fill out? Does it grow new shoots from the main stalk or just branches from the top that fall downward like a weeping willow tree? Also my soil is pretty much all clay. Will they live?
Info on lilacs?
It depends on what variety of lilac you have. Most of them grow the new shoots from the bottom and the upward stalks tend to fill out. For the clay soil, you can mix in some mushroom compost to help break down the clay. I have had great luck with this. I have included a couple of sites that you may find helpful.

Reply:they will fill out on their own often with new growth from the bottom and new branches....never seen one that weeps but there may be a veriety that does.....If your soil is pretty much clay you should dig a good size hole (3x root ball diam.)and add good earth and some peat moss mixed in.
Reply:They are probably rooted cuttings which is why they have just the one stem. They will develop new growth from the bottom.
