How do i get rid of a group of lilac tree stumps with lots of spreading roots.?

Get a mattox from Home Depot (it has a long handle with an axe on one side and a sharp hoe on the other side...so that you can flip back and forth between vertical cuts and horizontal cuts). And the hoe part is good for digging and chopping underneath to the main tap root, while the axe part chops loose the side roots. And you can chop the root bunch in half with the axe, then try to pull up part of it by using the hoe part to chop the roots underneath. (You have to have it trimmed down first). But a lilac is really pretty...why would you want to get rid of it..???

Get some copper tube and hammer it into the trunk, will kill it but will take time.
Reply:Lilacs are notorious for this - and very difficult to get rid of. You have to dig out as much of the root and stumps as possible and then as soon as new shoots show through either dig them out or spray the leaves with a systemic weed killer depending on your views of using garden chemicals and what else is around the plants. Good luck!
Reply:mix a table spoon of washing up liquid to some Roundup and spray them
Reply:go rent a stump grinder from the rental tool companies
Reply:Drill holes into the stumps and administer poison i.e turpentine/diesel. They will die straight away but will take some time to become brittle enough to snap off from ground level. Or put your spade and bowsaw to work.
Reply:drill a half inch hole as low and as deep as you can. fill this hole with salt. this%26#039;ll muller it quickest.

If you then get a block and tackle then the roots will come out with very little effort. just anchor it to something solid

Failing that, good old fashioned elbow grease liberally applied will sort it out, available from your local hardware store.
Reply:first i would douse it with ground clear which you can buy at home depot or lowes. then i would drill holes in it and inject it with a stump remover you can also buy at lowes or home depot which will decompose the stump in 2 weeks to a month depending on the size of the stump. it is however pretty expensive, but quick.
Reply:Acetic acid. Might mix it half and half with water and pour onto the roots. It makes the ground to acid for any plant life to grow on it. After all the plants have been killed out that you want to get rid of, you can bring the soil back with lime. You could also use salt water but this is not good for the soil and bad if there are metal pipes under or near. My mother almost blew up the house because she tried that last method.

Or you could go with a standard vegetation killer. Most work by spraying on the leaves. A few work at being absorbed.
Reply:I RECKON YOU COULD TRY DIGGING THEM UP
