Lilacs? Honeysuckle?

We just bought a newly constructed house and there%26#039;s not much going on in the way of %26quot;curb appeal%26quot;. When I was a child my mom had really lovely lilac bushes in our front yard. I%26#039;m thinking of trying to grow one in her memory.

What conditions are best suited to growing them? (I live in Georgia if that helps) Do they require a lot of attention/work? I haven%26#039;t much of a %26quot;green thumb%26quot;, but I%26#039;m eager to give it a try.

Also, I%26#039;ve always loved the scent given off by honeysuckle and was considering growing the vines in my backyard. I%26#039;ve been told that they%26#039;re more trouble than they%26#039;re worth and very difficult to control. Opinions?

Thanks for any info/advice you can share!

Lilacs? Honeysuckle?
Lilacs are easy to grow and you can prune Honeysuckles; thus you can have Lilacs and/or Honeysuckles. Good luck!

I hope it will help. Good luck!
Reply:I have 2 honeysuckle vines and they are no trouble at all. If they start getting too big...just trim them back. They are really easy and attract hummingbirds. Lilac bushes need to be pruned so they don%26#039;t get out of hand. There is a special way to prune them so you accidentally do not cut off the new buds for the following year.
Reply:Lilacs should be no problem in GA. I live in AL and they%26#039;re everywhere. Check out a gardening website for exact care or ask at a Home Depot or Lowe%26#039;s. Yes, honeysuckle are invasive vines that will take over - avoid them.
Reply:I grew up in Ohio, I now live in Arizona. If I could grow Lilacs here, I definately would. I miss them! They do great in warm climates with lots of rain. They should do fine in Georgia.
