Break off a small branch and cut end at an angle. Get out a potato (with lots of eyes) and poke the stem into the potato making sure some of the stems eyes are inserted in the potato. Soak in water about an hour then Plant the potato leaving the lilac stem sticking out. Keep watered until it takes root (about a week). WORKS with most tree transplants.
How/where to cut a piece of lilac from the main tree and plant it to have your own tree?
I liked that bit about using a potato to help propagate things...too funny. I%26#039;ll have to try that.
But in the meantime, here is some more information on propagation of lilac:
%26quot;Softwood cuttings are prepared from soft, succulent, new growth of woody plants, just as it begins to harden (mature). Shoots are suitable for making softwood cuttings when they can be snapped easily when bent and when they still have a gradation of leaf size (oldest leaves are mature while newest leaves are still small). For most woody plants, this stage occurs in May, June, or July. The soft shoots are quite tender, and extra care must be taken to keep them from drying out. The extra effort pays off, because they root quickly.%26quot;
Take a softwood cutting.
Dip it into water, then into rooting hormone (found at any w/m, home/garden stores) and shake off the excess.
Poke a hole in some potting soil, and insert the cutting.
You may want to cover your pot with something to create a mini-greenhouse effect.
Happy Gardening!
