If you trim off the old blooms this year you should get more next year. If you%26#039;ve had late frosts in the past years your bush might not have bloomed. Finally elevation has an effect on lilacs. At certain elevations lilacs will grow, but not bloom.
I have a 6 yr old lilac that has only bloomed the first year. Can anyone tell me what I can do to get blooms?
If you are pruning your lilac bush-- you can only prune shortly after it has quit blooming. To do that any other time of the year will stop the bush from blooming the following year
Reply:blooms come on new growth trim the tips of the branches a little every fall and miracle grow them before the blooms start and to force a flowering place a sheet over the plant 12 hours on and 12 hours off this shock the plant in to a new groth period it works on stubbornm house plants but the master gardener is on line or at the library
Reply:Your getting good advice so far. Cutting old blooms when you have none is hard to do.
Check with your County Extension Office if you have one?
You have nothing to lose by taking some of the oldest shoots and pruning them right to the ground. New shoots will come in time and reward you?
Do any of the folks around you have the same problem?
Reply:try replanting it in different soil. or better than that i strongly recommend going to the library if your town has one. and check out a book called 10,000 GARDEN QUESTIONS ANSWERED BY EXPERTS. not only will this book tell you your problems with plants,trees.grass.fruit trees.vegetable plants etc, etc, but will tell you how to fix them
Reply:Have you been cutting back the dead blooms in the fall? If so, you mustn%26#039;t cut the whole thing off; just back to next year%26#039;s bud. If you haven%26#039;t been pruning off old blooms, then perhaps it is planted too deep.
