I%26#039;ve had him 3 days and he isnt talking much. I think he is still being shy b/c he doesnt know whats going on. He makes his %26#039;jungle noises%26#039; more often. He likes being held and doesnt bite. He%26#039;s starting to let me pet him, but he%26#039;s very cautious. I spend 30+ minutes/day with him and hold him atleast 10+ minutes/day. His name is %26quot;Babe%26quot;, but i havent heard him say it.
At 4 yrs old, will he still learn new words/tricks?
Any suggestions to make him comfortable(bond) with me?
If he doesnt say %26#039;Babe%26#039; much, do you think i could change his name? Do you think i should change his name?
I just got a 4 yr old Lilac crowned amazon parrot?
My lilac crowned amazon is %26quot;Lila%26quot; and she is the love of my life! :) To me, they are the perfect amazon! A bit smaller, less tempermental, less loud, more loyal, endearing, sweet, smart, and on and on! :) Lilac Crowns are a more shy than other amazons and take their time with trust! It took Lila about 6 months to let me rub her head. She is one year old now and so far she only says %26quot;hello%26quot;... but she whisles, laughs, and makes all kinds of other sweet noises. Even if she never spoke a word.... I%26#039;d love her forever! Lilac-crowns are not known as the best talkers... but they can learn to say some words, in time, I beleive that your %26quot;babe%26quot; may learn to say some words, but then he may not. You can change his name! Sometimes it is even better for a bird if you do, hearing his old name might remind him of sad memories, etc. Suggestions for the bonding thing: Include Babe in as many of your daily activities as possible.... have him in the bathroom with you when you get ready for work, shower with him, eat dinner with him, share your food with him, watch TV together, talk him outside for short walks around the yard, go for a ride together, and try to up your direct interaction time with him to at least one hour every day!! Lila was very wary of me at first, and I felt like she would never really like me... but in time, she did and now she is my everything! :) I moved her cage into my bedroom, so we hang out together in the evenings, watch movies/TV together, and she talks to me and whistles at me when she hears me wake up in the mornings. She loves to go with me to Blockbuster to pick out movies... she laughs histerically whenever we go in there... it%26#039;s the only time she ever laughs... when we are in Blockbuster! :) I wish you the very best and I am so glad that a beautiful Lilac Crowned Amazon has found such a wonderful new owner!! :)
Reply:He just needs time to bond with you . Did he talk before you got him, and how much? Good he likes being held. Babe isn%26#039;t too bad of a name, I thik it would depend on how much he said or answered to his name before. I think you should keep it.
Reply:I found that birds only talk if they want to. He hasn%26#039;t been around you enough to trust you yet. Think of him as a 2 or 3yr old. you both have to get used to each other. After all he will live a long time. I have two conure parrots one is 12 and one is 15. The 15yr old talks a lot but the other parrot doesn%26#039;t. Just keep talking to Babe and I%26#039;ll bet he will pick up some english. I think you could change his name if you wanted to but it may take a while for the bird to respond. And the bird may like his name. I believe at only 4 your bird has a great capacity to learn lots of new things. Be patient.
Reply:sounds fun.change his name and make him yours.by the end of the month he will read the news paper with you
Reply:You aren%26#039;t spending enough time with him. Yes, it will take him a week or so to get used to the new place. But 30 minutes a day is a drop in the bucket. You can teach him new words. Amazons are good talkers. He will learn if you teach.
Reply:Some birds when moved to a different home stop talking altogether. He may never talk again. Just keep doing what you are doing and maybe once he feels comfortable and secure with you he will again start to talk.
He will never be to old to learn new words or tricks.
