There is enough concern about this truth that if you think you can breed for blue, you will likely get into trouble. One breeder who line breeds carefully can attest to some really bad coat problems in certain blue Chihuahua genetic heritage%26#039;s. So cherish the blue as the special dog it is, but don%26#039;t breed a blue to a blue!
You can get a blue Chihuahua from a black and tan, a chocolate, or even a fawn parent. Obviously, to get a blue Chihuahua, the parents must have a recessive blue gene in their heritage, even if it is some way back in the line. The blue of a blue Chihuahua can be part of a brindle pattern or a tri- or multi-color coat. You can enhance the possibility of having a blue or blue brindle pup by making sure that you are mating dogs with genetic blue in their lines, but there is absolutely no surety in this.
Is breeding a blue chihuahua and a lilac safe? I know your not supposed to breed blue to blue.?
If you don%26#039;t fully understand the genetics of coat color in the breed of dog you are interested in, you shouldn%26#039;t be breeding at all. Find a reputable breeder (http://www.akc.org/breeders/resp_breedin... to be your mentor. Work closely with them to learn what dogs should and should not be bred, about showing, etc. Then, once you are experienced and knowledgeable you can get into breeding for yourself.
Reply:Because both the blue and the %26quot;lilac%26quot; color are the result of recessive genes, I think that breeding one to the other would be risky.

Or, you can ask at your local shelter. They%26#039;ll tell you all about what happens to puppies from BYB%26#039;s.
Reply:Lilac is a diluted form of the color chocolate. (bbdd)
I%26#039;m not sure where you heard that you can%26#039;t breed blues, and I don%26#039;t even see anywhere a color for Chihuahuas termed %26quot;blue%26quot;, so I think you must be meaning %26quot;merle%26quot;, which is apparently a lethal color gene in Chihauhaus (and this makes sense as it is also a lethal gene in many other breeds). As long as the lilac is not also carrying the merle gene (sometimes lethal genes cannot be carried, I do not know if this is true for the merle color in dogs) you should be safe, but according to the Chihuahua Club of America, some merles are apparent as puppies and fade as adults, so if you don%26#039;t know the history of the lilac or it has merles in it%26#039;s pedigree, I wouldn%26#039;t risk the health of the puppies on it. I also think you really need to learn genetics, how to do punnett squares, and the standard of the breed before you try to breed ANYTHING.
