The family home has been sold and the owner said I may get a start from this tree. It is at least 50 yeas old and possible more. Maybe even a bush at one time but now is more like a medium size tree. Where is the best part of the tree to get this start for it to survive and flourish? And when? I live in Northwest Indiana. Thank you for any help that might come my way for this project.
Our family had a big old old lilac tree with a beautiful dark purple double blossom.?
I%26#039;ve never tried rooting a stem, mine sucker profusely and produce an endless supply of saplings for friends. RScott
Reply:The best bet is just to get a sucker that is coming up from the ground. Get some good roots on it and in a few years you should have a great bush.

You want them just after flowering. Plant them in very well watered ground and water them often until you know they are doing well. You don%26#039;t want huge branches, just 3 or 4 feet long and not too leafy.
If they catch they grow surprisingly fast and will likely be flowering in the third year.
