What can anyone tell me about the Lilac bush, reguarding when to prune . Does it flower every year?

Yes, it flowers every year.

You need never prune it at all. I don%26#039;t prune mine, and I%26#039;ve had it for 15 years. It blooms profusely every year except last year, when a late prolonged killing freeze knocked out all kinds of flowers in the area

You may prune it if it%26#039;s getting too big for you. The time to prune, is late spring/early summer - AFTER the flowers fade. If you prune in fall or early spring, you%26#039;ll be cutting off that spring%26#039;s flowers.

If you don%26#039;t care about cutting off a year%26#039;s worth of blooms - it can virtually be pruned at any time. They are almost impossible to kill.

Syringas are lime lovers, lime takes six months to be available in soil to plants. Report It

Reply:it is best to prune once the flowers die.Prune to the end of the flower stalk.

if you don%26#039;t prune it you won%26#039;t get a good showing the next year. The plant will try to make seeds at the expense of setting buds for the next year.

It is also a good idea to prune out any crossing branches to make sure there is good air circulation
Reply:Yes, your Lilac Bush should bloom every year. Regarding pruning - for a mature bush you should only prune to maintain the shape of your bush unless you would like to make it bushier than it is now - for a new smaller plant you should prune after it flowers in the spring. If pruning you should go down each branch about 2 or 3 leaves and cut this way your bush will be much more fuller when mature.
Reply:my grandmother has had 3 plants of lilac for over 25yrs, and she prunes them back only when they get too big, thats about every 5 yrs.

they smell great too! my gg always cuts some off, and puts them in her house, to make them smell the place up!
Reply:flowers every year would not prune unless mature than only in fall
Reply:prune AFTER bloom. You can prune down to the last 2nd or 3rd leaf buds, trying not to remove more than a total of 1/3 of live growth.

A Lilac, or Syringa, will bloom every year. It will bloom more profusely if pruned properly.

A Syringa blooms on new growth, rarely old wood.
Reply:I agree with Sara and Cat, however someone told me I need to fertalize with a more acidic fertalizer in early spring to get them to bloom. Only 2 of my 5 bloomed last year and then very sparingly. Mine blooms in late spring early summer in Utah. They are obviously old plants though, very woody. I think I might trim them way back right after they bloom this year.
