When is the proper time to prune a lilac tree?

boy sometimes i wonder about the answers some people give on here, remember people are asking for help, and you should try and make sure you have the proper answers as that person could well use your advice..that said , the time to prune lilacs is right after they stop blooming..reason being lilacs set buds early for the next seasons flowers, so if you prune late you will remove next years flower buds and that also means you don%26#039;t prune them in spring either until after they flower..it is also good to prune lightly more frequently than to prune allot once its out of control because lilacs produce on old wood ----blanco

Fall.
Reply:Here%26#039;s an extra note: If you plan to prune in the spring, make darned sure all blossoms are done. New foilage (leaves) come from the old blossom branches, so be careful where you cut.
Reply:In the spring before it blooms or right after the blooms fall off. Almost all plants can be pruned like this.
Reply:i live in snow country,so i do it early spring.this way the tender bark will not get dammage from the cold, wind, and the new shouts get alot of sun light.
Reply:The best time to prune is shortly after all the flowers have passed. You will avoid removing next years flower buds as they are not formed yet. It is best to avoid removing more than 50% of the plant in one pruning ( it will survive heavier pruning but will look bad for a year or two). If you need to bring an overgrown shrub back to better size...do it over 2-3 years of pruning...you will be happier (as will the plant) that way.

Remember to prune off branches as close to the main stem as you can...this reduces damage and healing time for the plant.
Reply:Right after the blooms have fallen. Always remember that this year%26#039;s growth is next year%26#039;s blooms. So be careful about what you prune away.
Reply:You should cut off the old blooms after it has bloomed--so I guess you can do it any time now.
Reply:here in the pacific north west they are pruned between Jan 15 and mar 15
